What Prayer is (and isn’t) - Pt.2

  • Our Culture is COMPLETELY OPPOSITE of Jesus’ hearers

Jesus taught us that God is resistant and requires a lot of nagging to deserve the answer we want. Right?

    Luke 11:5-8 (NLT)

I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity[e] he will surely get up and give you as much as you need. [e]NLT translation notes: Or in order to avoid shame, or so his reputation won’t be damaged. NIV translation notes: yet to preserve his good name

    Voices of the Heart

God answers our prayers for HIS honor.

If a selfish, sleeping, inconvenienced neighbor can care, how much more can your Father!

    Luke 11:9-10 (NLT)

A.S.K. prayers don’t nag an uncaring god.

A.S.K. prayers shape US as we persist with a loving Father.

When we keep on praying, God changes us and our prayers.

Jesus taught that God is a generous, gift-giving Father

    Luke 11:11-13 (NLT)

    James 1:17 (GW)

Jesus taught that the very best gift is the gift of the Holy Spirit.

    Father—God above us

    Son—God with us

    Spirit—God in us

    Romans 8:15 (CSB)

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. –Matthew 26:26-27 (NIV)
