Series: Short Stories

The Yeast

July 19, 2020 | Mark Simmons

Luke 13:10-17 (NIV)

This is the shortest of the short stories we will look at:

Luke 13:20-21 (NIV)

20 Again he asked, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.”

Yeast is a fungi. 1,500 species

If there were no yeast, there would be:

No risen bread.

No wine.

No beer.

No hard ciders.

No soy sauce.

No kimchi.

No yogurt.

No fermented cheeses mold and yeast

No kombucha.

Nothing fermented.

What does that even mean?

Luke 13:20-21 (NIV)

God’s Kingdom is humble (one lump to 60 pounds)

Jesus, his followers and one healed woman

God’s Kingdom is feminine (like a woman’s daily task)

A male farmer scattering mustard seed and a housewife making bread.

Female imagery for God—a genderless spirit. Revealed mostly using masculine terms and metaphors.

Male and female both together show the image of God. Neither alone.

God’s Kingdom is celebratory (bread for a village)

60 pounds would feed 100-150 people.

Not just for you. It’s expansive and others-oriented

God’s Kingdom is mysterious (how does it grow?)

They had no idea how it worked. We’ve only known for about 250 years.

Not a factory with replicable steps.

It’s relationship based.

God’s Kingdom is hidden (it has to be mixed in)

In your family, neighborhood, school, workplace, small group

Once it is kneaded in, it can’t be seen.

In the larger world

Inside you. You can’t always see it.

God’s Kingdom is shocking (leaven is good)

Get your communion elements

Jewish Spring Festival is the Feast of Unleavened Bread which starts with the Passover Feast

Matzoh—Stripes and holes pierced to bake faster, but also the stripes and piercings of the Messiah.

Exodus 12:39; 14-20

Unleavened bread = Bread of affliction/humiliation

Deuteronomy 16:1-4

Matthew 16:5-12 (NIV)

Luke 12:1 (NIV)

1 Corinthians 5:6-8 (NIV)

Galatians 5:7-9 (NIV)

Very occasionally positive

Lev 23:17
